ABSTRACT
It is crucial that departmental policy describes a strategy for meeting pupils’ special educational needs within the particular curricular area. The policy should set the scene for any visitor to the mathematics department – from supply staff to inspectors – and make a valuable contribution to the departmental handbook. The process of developing a department SEN policy offers the opportunity to clarify and evaluate current thinking and practice within the mathematics team and to establish a consistent approach.
