ABSTRACT
Medicine is a funny business. Yet physicians are not noted for a sense of humor. That is both odd and sad: odd, because a good diagnostician, it seems to me, exercises a cultivated capacity to "catch on" in a way entirely analogous to, if not identical with, the comical sense; sad, because the medical curriculum neglects humor as an important component of cognitive style and of diagnostic efficacy in the training of practitioners.
