Wedonotknowtheidentityoftheauthorofthisgroupofpoems,whowas clearlyfamiliarwithSulpicia'spoems(above).Scholarshavesuggestedthat hemightbeTibullus,ortheyoungOvid,oranunknowncontemporaryof Tibullus.SomestrikingechoesbetweenlinesoftheGarlandandOvid's Metamorphoses,makeastrongcaseforadateofcompositionlaterthanthe publicationoftheMetamorphosesin8C.E.
