ABSTRACT

The case of the Carthusians was different. They suffered for the same reason and deserve even more sympathy because they were not, in fact, anything like as dangerous; also they were treated very badly indeed while More was handled with comparative gentleness. Torturous imprisonment instead of reasoned persuasion was applied to break them, but they did not break. Throughout one feels that this resistance from monks only angered everyone: no one had any patience with monks. The royal supremacy was achieved and opposition to it wiped out; it was time to consolidate the position by putting the supremacy to practical use. Cromwell turned his attention to the monasteries of England where the last centres of resistance might be suspected to bet and where there lay the wealth which the laity desired.
