ABSTRACT
MOnday through Thursday at 3:30 P.M., just after classes were dismissed and before leaving for the day, students usually dropped by the eleventh-grade classroom where Meyer would have posted a note on the bulletin board right inside the door. Just to check. Scrawled on a bit of yellow paper, usually ripped from someplace else, would be a word or a phrase: "On Liberty," "C2Hs-O-H; C2Hs-O-C2Hs; C2H30-H; C2H30-O-C2H30," "Mondrian," "Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny," "Simone de Beauvoir," "Hunger." This was the subject. In the morning there would be a question that had something to do with the displayed words.
