ABSTRACT

Ms.Garrison teaches a block course of English and social studies for sixth graders in a middle school serving a diverse, largely working-and middle-class community in a moderate-sized ~ity. One fall, while thinking about how to approach the required Central American unit of study, Ms. Garrison noticed an article in the local newspaper about Jennifer Harbury, a Harvard-trained lawyer who for some years worked to assist immigrants from Central America, including refugees from the Guatemalan civil war.
