ABSTRACT

With growing international interest in community-based tourism, the maintenance of cultural and environmental integrity in small, fragile communities has never been more critical. This integrity may easily be lost through shortsighted, harmful development schemes whose goal is quick economic gain rather than sustainable community development. In this scenario, both tourists and communities ultimately lose. The tourism development of small communities needs to be actively planned, developed, and managed, with a strong emphasis on community involvement and sustainable development principles. The Thai village of Klong Khwang is one such example.
