ABSTRACT

Tourism is the world’s largest industry, currently providing one out of every ten jobs worldwide. It is also a growing industry; according to the World Tourism Organization’s publication “Tourism Highlights: Edition 2003,” in 2003 Southeast Asia alone received more than 42 million international tourists-up from 21 million in 1990and the forecasts are for even larger numbers of domestic and international tourists across the globe. How tourism destinations will cope with these visitor numbers in a sustainable manner is a crucial issue for urban management.
