ABSTRACT
Many labels have been applied to children who deviate somewhat from the so-called “normal” child. Perhaps the most common label used in the past is the term handicapped. In its purely literal meaning, a handicap is a disadvantage that makes achievement unusually difficult. I prefer the more recently used term challenged because it best characterizes the categories of children that will be dealt with in this chapter.
