ABSTRACT

This case study has been prepared to facilitate an understanding of Brazilian extractive reserves and the potential of ecotourism to enhance social, economic, and environmental conditions within them. It can be used with students of tourism, environmental policy and management, community development, rural sociology, and other areas where there is an interest in understanding applications and issues involved with ecotourism in developing areas. The issues raised by the case study can be discussed at various conceptual levels and so it is suitable for use with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals who are seeking to understand models for tourism planning and sustainability.
