ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Th e primary focus of this chapter is the current status and trends of virtual schools and e-learning in elementary and secondary schools, and in basic education, with a particular focus on the United States. Th e context of online learning in schools and basic education is reviewed. Developments in the United States are highlighted, within the international context, and basic information on economic aspects of virtual schooling is presented.
