ABSTRACT

The United Nations-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2007) Working Group I (WGI) declared in February 2007 that the world is warming and that humans are mostly to blame. Another IPCC working group, WGII, reported in April 2007 that humans are also behind many of the physical and biological changes that are occurring. Owing to increasing levels of greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the world is experiencing receding glaciers, early-blooming trees, bleached corals, acidifying oceans, killer heat waves, fires, pests and diseases, butterflies retreating up mountain sides, oceans warming and cod reproducing further North towards the Arctic Ocean compared to only a few years ago.
