ABSTRACT

The early contributions of Gini and Lorenz have shaped the way the whole subject of income-distribution analysis has developed (Gini 1912, Lorenz 1905). Yet, over the last three or four decades, the Gini-Lorenz insights have been largely reinterpreted using the welfare-based approaches pioneered by Atkinson (1970) and Kolm (1969) taking their cue from the early work by Dalton (1920). This explicitly welfarist approach to the analysis of income distribution has influenced the development of research methodology and practical policy tools.
