ABSTRACT

Our research on the supply side of the market is confined here to a specific segment of themarket: traffickedwomen.Wewant to underline at the beginning of this chapter that this segment is only a part of the supply side of the market. Most individuals enter the sex market freely and they are not included in the following analysis. As we stressed in Part II, the decision to enter this labour market depends on feasible alternatives, their wages and stigma/reputation considerations. Our first intention was to analyse the choices of individuals who entered the market freely. Nevertheless, despite many attempts, we were not able to find a data set with information about sexworkers. The analysis of sexually exploited trafficked women is therefore driven by the data. In fact, the increasing political attention to the crime of trafficking has allowed the International Organisation forMigration to collect data on trafficked individuals, and among those, the sexually exploited ones.
