ABSTRACT

Political governance can take many forms, from representative democracy

to autocratic rule. The concept of empire refers to military control over territories that previously were autonomous. Inequality is central to the

concept of empire. This applies primarily to inequality of military power

between rulers and ruled. Inequality can extend to social status, political

rights and income between people in the metropolis and the periphery.

Inhabitants of the mother country may be wealthier; have more political

rights and a higher social status than people of the periphery.
