ABSTRACT

This chapter explains what a class analytic approach to municipal privatization entails. It begins by sketching the Marxian class theory that underlies the approach. This sketch introduces the two concepts-the class process and overdetermination-that structure the approach. The aim of the discussion is to provide a framework and vocabulary that facilitate comprehension of the class analysis of Central Park’s privatization developed in the next chapter. In addition to explaining the approach’s implications, the discussion also compares it to the mainstream approaches whose evolution was traced in Chapter Two. The chapter’s appendix extends the discussion of implications by addressing the issue of post-privatization wage outcomes.
