ABSTRACT
This is an ambitious book, a history of economics from classical antiquity to the present day for advanced students and economists – the bibliography alone runs to nearly fifty pages. Serious full-scale histories like this do not come along very often, so this is an opportunity to consider how the subject is presented and the role of Adam Smith within it. For this Review, I shall concentrate on the forty-five page chapter, effectively a self-contained essay, on Smith.
