ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to present some evidence on the existence and effect of interjurisdictional competition on regulation at the provincial level for Canada. Given the pioneering nature of this work, we limit ourselves to evidence at the provincial level. The topic is of interest since Canada is one of the oldest federations and is located next to the United States where this issue has been widely studied. Yet in Canada, little work appears to have been done on this issue. The chapter is divided in two parts. First, we examine the institutional framework of the Canadian federation to establish where and how competition may manifest itself. Then we present some empirical evidence on interjurisdictional competition in Canada.
