ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a global overview of contemporary indigenous movements for justice and land rights. In the first part of the chapter, I examine the impacts and effects of neoliberal development projects and policies on indigenous communities and the environment. I also explore state responses to indigenous resistance against government and corporate incursions on their lands. The second part of the chapter focuses on the Adivasis in India’s Wayanad district of Kerala; their struggles and collective action to secure land in Muthanga; and the Indian state’s failure to uphold constitutional and legislative rights of its indigenous citizens. I argue that the resistance movements by indigenous peoples around the world against capitalist interests offer the last ray of hope for future generations.
