ABSTRACT

The protection of computers from unlawful activity by those who would gain access to personal and proprietary data requires both computer-and network-based measures. Firewalls and antimalware software, particularly for high-end applications, are considered an absolute necessity in order to enhance computer security. Programs such as intrusion detection systems (IDS) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS) identify and impede or block threats. At this time, these systems can only detect approximately 70% of illegal intrusions and therefore are only partially effective in reducing the potential of computer penetration. However, at present these systems can and do implement a measure of acceptable application policies and usage, along with document control policies.
