ABSTRACT

The chapter addresses the organization of the steering committee, its tasks, and areas of consideration. Steering committees should have several members, each with different expertise or interests. The chapter also addresses several types, including the multi-specialty Independent Practice Association (IPA) or Physician Hospital Organization (PHO), the single-specialty IPA or PHO, and the non-physician IPA. The steering committee for the Management Services Organization (MSO) has a similar task to that of the IPA and PHO in its development, with the exception that it must have leadership at the helm and an ability to speak at many levels of understanding. The first thing that the MSO steering committee must do is decide upon the activities and role that the MSO will play in the management of the clinical team that is related at arm’s length, and who may be the same investors in a different organization with a different corporate setup.
