ABSTRACT

In the preceding two chapters, we introduced the A3 tool as a summary device for problem solving and proposal writing. However, as is quickly discovered when using the tool in context, there are many shades of gray between those two types. For example, problems solved can lead to proposals to do something differently. Alternatively, proposals often solve a problem as a means to a new end state. Simply stated, problem solving and proposal writing are not always mutually exclusive. We hope, though, that presenting them as separate topics helps the reader sense the differences and possibilities of the A3 summary report, particularly their use at different points in the PDCA cycle.
