ABSTRACT

Many investigations of alleged sexual assault begin with a victim dialing 911. On receipt of the call, uniformed police ocers and emergency medical personnel are dispatched to the victim’s location. If the victim is coherent, the rst ocer at the scene will conduct a brief interview to ascertain what happened to her and whether she is able to describe her attacker. One detective may be dispatched to the hospital to gain additional information from the victim there; simultaneously, a team of investigators and crime scene technicians conducts a crime scene search. Investigators are assigned to the case, and at some point, aer the victim has been treated at the hospital, a lengthy interview may be conducted.
