ABSTRACT

I was reluctant to include this chapter, but since it is such a hot topic among senior managers no matter where I travel, I felt compelled to discuss it. Their complaints usually sound something like this: “These kids today don’t want to do what it takes to get the job done, and they don’t respect those of us who do. They completely lack initiative and need constant direction. If I’m not there to tell them what to do, things just don’t get done. Besides that, even though they have very little experience, they think they should be promoted in a heartbeat. Hell, I’ve got one kid on my job who thinks that by next year he should be doing my job. He doesn’t have a clue about what he doesn’t know.”
