ABSTRACT

Thinking about knowledge leads inevitably to the question: Knowledge about what? When we seek to know, we seek to know about some demonstrable or objective set of facts, some real circumstance where real means that which is actual and true. Chapter 3 aims to address the “knowledge about what” question, expressed as the nature of relevant reality and to lay the groundwork for integrating the following assertions:

The identification and treatment of the multiple realities of organiza-• tional life have practical implications. Specific approaches to knowing are relevant to specific realities.• Knowledge is not absolute and the quality of knowing varies accord-• ing to the nature of the reality in question.
