ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION We cannot control age – it is not a matter of choice. However, the way in which we grow old and the way we value age and older people are dependent on many factors including class, gender, status and the perceptions of those around us. Growing old can be difficult for anyone. Retirement may bring complex problems, including a decline in status, role loss and reduction in income. People may face loneliness, isolation and declining physical health. In addition to these problems, older people from black and minority ethnic groups may also face hostility and racism.
