ABSTRACT

You can be injured or killed by an unknown substance due to its hazards. Risk includes injury due to physical form, radioactivity, reactivity, corrosivity, fl ammability, toxicity, and explosive properties of the material. Th is chapter describes the hazards and secondary hazards that might occur. Understanding these hazards will help you recognize and characterize hazards during

analysis. When hazards have been characterized, you can predict how an unknown material will react on a larger scale. Th is systematic use of information as it becomes available will help you determine the events that may occur and the magnitude of their consequences.
