ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces infrasound, sounds at frequencies below human hearing, and ultrasound, sounds above human hearing. Sonar detection used to be a manual process-an operator would listen to the pings through earphones-and thus used audible sound frequencies. Since sonar has been automated, however, it primarily uses ultrasound.
