ABSTRACT

Highly educated yet unable to command English with any great facility, Orlicky found it difficult to find work when he first arrived. He was unable to meet the rigors of the language for the jobs to which he was suited; yet was overqualified for placement as a menial laborer. He eventually found his way to Chicago, where he took an advanced degree at the University of Chicago. He subsequently found a job in the production control department of J. I. Case, manufacturer of heavy equipment in Racine, Wisconsin.
