ABSTRACT

At the end of World War II there was a brief respite, but cocaine returned again in the 1980s. There is an interesting theory as to why the revival of interest occurred. Professor David Musto, of Yale University, suggested that cycles of drug abuse begin when a generation of young people no longer remembers the adverse consequences experienced by the preceding generation. Cycles end when drug users realize that other drug users they know are becoming ill. As their awareness increases, experimentation falls off, and the cycle eventually ends.
