ABSTRACT
The Chernobyl accident changed many people’s perception of the safety of nuclear power. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated, and almost as many were involved in the cleanup efforts. In all, 134 patients suffered from acute radiation syndrome and 28 people died in the acute period as a result of radiation exposure. It is instructive to look at accidents in the former Soviet Union before and since Chernobyl.
