The connection between stalking and domestic violence certainly seems obvious enough. The classic scenario persists in the minds of most people who see these related subjects from their periphery. One party (most often the female) in a husband-wife or boyfriend-girlfriend relationship breaks the connection and leaves or attempts to leave. The “wounded” party (which statistics, observers, scholars, and law enforcement agree is usually the male) attempts or succeeds in “wounding” the victim, using harassment, covert and overt threats, vandalism, battery, or even fatal violence. If the perpetrator in this event were ever posed with the question, “Why?” the simple answer would probably refer back to a well-trotted cliché: “If I can’t have her, then nobody will!”
