ABSTRACT

Below, listed alphabetically by state, is descriptive information about the type of medicolegal death investigation system in each state. Each state can be classified as a coroner, medical examiner (ME), or mixed state. Coroner states have coroners in every county and lack medical examiner systems. Medical examiner states have no coroners. Mixed states have at least some coroners, but also have at least one medical examiner system. Figures 23.1 through 23.4 show death investigation types and their historical emergence in the U.S.
