The way in which autopsy findings are reported depends on the pathologist, the institution, and the type and needs of the case in question. Although some guidelines exist on recommended ways of preparing autopsy reports, there is no method that is universally used by everyone who performs autopsies. Further, autopsy reports for institution-based death investigations tend to differ slightly from those in medicolegal death investigations in that the former tend to be a little longer, more medically oriented in terminology, and somewhat excessive in detail. Regardless of how the autopsy is reported, the report tends to contain the following types of information.
