ABSTRACT

The information generated in an institution-based death investigation usually becomes part of the patient’s medical record and is subject to the same confidentiality procedures as the medical record. Although the patient’s physician or the institution may use the medical record, third parties may not usually obtain the medical record without an authorization from the legal next of kin.
