ABSTRACT

Why is reopening (and, we hope, solving) cold cases important? We do it:

• For the victims, to bring them justice • For the families, to bring them “resolution” (a term they prefer to

“closure”) • For society (re¶ecting a mutual recognition that each of us counts) • To arrest and convict murderers who think they are never going to

get caught

Dedicated investigators agree on never taking “no” for an answer and never giving up. But, they also agree that if cases take longer to solve than they wish, it is important to leave paper trails and case —les the way they would want their successors to —nd them in the future. Highlights of resources from each chapter are outlined below.
