ABSTRACT

Most organizations change as a reaction to the various impacts on day-to-day operations. While this method of adaptation tends to respond to the need for change, it does so in a tactical manner, often at a cost to efficiency, suboptimizing the organization as a whole. Strategy looks at both the current conditions and the potential future conditions in an effort to define the changes the organization must make to meet the future needs of either the customer or the mission while achieving the desired long-range goals and objectives of the organization. Having an effective strategy enables the organization to proactively affect change in an efficient and effective manner, rather than reactively in a manner that not only wastes resources but may inadvertently drive the organization down a road to failure.
