ABSTRACT

A death by natural causes is not always easy to identify. The most tranquil scene, such as the discovery of an elderly man lying dead in his bed, could be hiding an unspeakable murder; however, a man found lying on a bloody bathroom floor can later be ruled a natural death. Forensic epidemiologists examining natural deaths must have a deep understanding of how natural deaths are investigated, why certain natural deaths receive a forensic investigation and others do not, and the type of data available for analysis.
