ABSTRACT

Among the many different manners of deaths investigated by the ME/C office, homicide cases are one type that typically go beyond the walls of the ME/C office and enters the legal and judicial systems. The information collected at the crime scene, the results of the autopsy, and the analysis of the forensic evidence must all have been identified, documented, and collected in a manner that conforms to established scientific principles and practices and also be admissible in a court of law. Every member of the ME/C staff involved in an investigation must understand and be trained in the proper procedures of collecting, processing, and analyzing the evidence as well as the principles of the chain of custody.
