ABSTRACT

Most employees are never subjected to forensic toxicology testing. Job applicants, on the other hand, are often required to be tested for drugs as a condition of hire. All federal government jobs in the United States require preemployment drug testing. Over 90 percent of the largest U.S. corporations also make drug testing a condition of employment. The rationale for this testing and the rejection of drug-positive individuals is that numerous studies have shown that persons who use drugs of abuse are often less reliable and less productive employees. This aspect of forensic toxicology, workplace drug testing, is a massive enterprise with several hundred thousand specimens examined each week in the United States. The nature of this testing is described below.
