ABSTRACT

Profiling offers no “recipe” or secret formula for bringing these behavioral perceptions to life in the context of an investigation. There is, however, a need for in-depth experience, a systematic analysis of case materials, and expertise in crime analysis methods. Such expertise applies an understanding of human behavior and follows behaviorally based principles. Some practitioners may imitate profiling expertise, or make zealous claims, but those lacking a background grounded in extensive criminal investigative experience, coupled with proper academic and forensic training as well as a network of qualified professionals (certified by the FBI), often deliver little more than a superficial comprehension of these intricate perspectives. In some cases, self-professed experts may severely harm rather than help an investigation.
