ABSTRACT

Th e aim of this chapter is to consider broad questions regarding prisoner transitions from prison to community, as well as victims’ rights in the course of these transitions. Th e three main themes of the chapter are:

Th at we have to live with those we punish (so how do, or should, we • prepare prisoners for release back into the community?)

Th at we have to support those who have been harmed by crime (so how • do, or should, we involve victims in the criminal justice system?) Th at victims and off enders have diff erent rights, needs, and respon-• sibilities (so how do, or should, these interact in relation to specifi c issues, such as release and the conditions of release?)

Th e chapter is intended to clarify issues and to stimulate informed discussion of issues relating to victim-off ender relations.
