ABSTRACT

The topics of the previous chapters have a way of coming back to us. A little self-knowledge is essential and goes a long way toward our making better decisions and working with and through others. What people choose as their professional commitment statement is tied up with their perception of how they see themselves in the world, what they enjoy doing, and what their assessment is of what they are good at; not everyone has the talent to be a pop star or scientist, for example. How we communicate with others is also related to our social skills and our ability to manage ourselves in the presence of others. We need to know when, for example, we are about to lose patience with others and how to handle that. Our willingness to draw lines and confront others over their performance and behavior is a£ected by our experience of others doing the same with us in the past. People skills and self-knowledge are connected.
