ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some standards, guidelines, and protocols that have been or are currently defined in terms of security and personal safety. Standards and guidelines outlined are provided as reference materials since we feel that they are pertinent to setting security or safety standards for critical infrastructure and emergency response methods. Overall, most standards and compliance protocols are directly governed within each representative sector, except for a few [maintained by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and/or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)]. [Note that not all sectors have established (or are developing) standards of compliance protocols.]

The mission of the international not-for-profit organization the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating scientifically based consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education. NFPA has a global membership of more than 75,000 individuals and more than 80 national trade and professional organizations worldwide.
