ABSTRACT

The goal of Toyota Production System (TPS), in the broadest of terms, is to understand and implement the best way of manufacturing a product. The system of TPS respects the expertise of the people doing the work, and therefore it is essential for people with knowledge of the process to determine the best way. Even though the ideal state is rarely achieved, the gap management philosophy ensures that the organization is achieving the best possible condition for the process. If we as manufacturers think of all those motions up to and beyond the paint process as Value-Added Work, then we miss tremendous opportunities for kaizen. Transportation is necessary in a manufacturing environment; however, classifying it as waste will force the organization to minimize the transportation of the product. Overproduction is simply producing more finished products than are necessary to fill the available orders. The chapter pressents a deep dive into understanding and identifying waste.
