ABSTRACT

In this information age identity thieves can easily access protection specialists name, Social Security number, and many other personal identifiers. They steal mail from mailboxes to obtain bank and credit card statements, preapproved credit offers, checks, medical insurance information, driver’s license numbers, and tax information. This chapter outlines what protection specialists can do to lower their chances of becoming a victim of identity theft. Many individuals receive preapproved offers of credit in the mail. Unfortunately, these offers can increase risk of identity theft. When tossed in the trash unshredded, such credit offers are potential targets of dumpster divers who can use them to order credit cards in protection specialists name. Many identity theft cases involve fraudulent use of the mail. Notify the postal inspector in the jurisdiction of the fraudulent activity if protection specialists suspect the identity thief has filed a change of address or has used the mail to commit fraud.
