ABSTRACT

Aerial surveillance began when humans climbed trees and cliffs to better observe food, shelter, fuel sources, predators, and the activities of other people. Telescopes enabled sailors in crow’s nests to better observe the stars and to spot land for thirsty sailors. Not long after humans invented hot air balloons, they realized they could use telescopes, binoculars, and photographic equipment from better vantage points if they lifted them with aerial technologies. Modern airplanes, helicopters, and space shuttles enable us to see from unprecedented heights.
