ABSTRACT

This chapter will consider challenges relating to mental health and policing in Africa. Although there are dangers when generalising across the African continent, this chapter nonetheless speaks about Africa as a whole, while taking examples from individual countries. As will be seen, there is a paucity of literature dealing directly with the topic of mental health and policing in Africa. Thus, the literature as it relates singularly to mental health and to policing has been examined with a view to identifying relevant issues requiring further attention in moving toward better police responses to people with mental illness.
