ABSTRACT
Crimes of technology are increasing in the –rst decades of the twenty-–rst century primarily because there is an increase in high-tech devices being used. e technology in use includes computers, smart telephones, e-readers, MP3 players, credit card machines, and check-writing machines. Computer crime has been recognized since it became somewhat popular in the 1960s. e more recent term being used is cybercrime. Computer crimes are actions that are considered statutory crimes. ere are three approaches on how computers are used illegally according to Higgins (2010, pp. 1-2):
• e computer may be used as an instrument. Examples include illegally downloading music, movies, or sožware.
