ABSTRACT

Domestic violence (DV) presents a unique problem in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) communities across the United States. While GLBT survivors and perpetrators of DV share characteristics similar to those of heterosexuals, there are also significant differences, which emphasize the need to address DV within this population from a unique approach. This chapter will discuss the topic of DV in GLBT populations and explore disparities within the social service and criminal/justice systems, which weaken law enforcement and social service professionals’ abilities to respond effectively to DV.
